Katherine Propper is an Austin-based director and writer. Her short films have screened at a variety of festivals around the world. Her latest short film BIRDS won the Grand Jury Prize at AFI Fest ‘22, Special Jury Recognition at SXSW ‘22 and in the International Competition at Clermont-Ferrand ‘22. Her short film STREET FLAME screened at the Tribeca Film Festival ‘19 and won Best Student Short at Sidewalk ‘19. She was named a filmmaker with Emerging Grit at Indie Grits and won the Best Director prize at the Women Texas Film Festival. Her short PENTECOST received Special Jury Recognition from the Oak Cliff Film Festival ‘18 before being publicly broadcast on PBS’s Texas Frame of Mind series.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, she holds an MFA in Film Directing from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in Art History from Georgetown University. Since moving to Texas, she has experimented with her creative process, drawing from non-fiction filmmaking and experiences such as working as an editor for director Terrence Malick. Her latest short film BIRDS won the narrative student pitch competition at the New Orleans Film Festival and received a grant from the Austin Film Society. She is currently in post-production on her first feature film.
